Dear Doctor:
My recovery from my shoulder injury has been steady, but the dislocation of my sternoclavicular articulation has persisted, causing me to seek counsel from a dear friend, Dr. Scott Surasky, one of the top chiropractic orthopedists in the NY metro area.
My first thought was to see Dr. Mark Charrette, widely regarded as the top extremity adjuster in the profession. But Scott referred me to Dr. Mitch Mally of Davenport, Iowa, with a reputation for being a “tenth degree black belt of extremity adjusting.”
Dr. Mally’s teaching schedule was densely packed, and my own travel plans left us few windows in the next month or two, but I didn’t want to wait. So, I hopped on a big bird and headed to the ProSport seminar in Vegas, where Dr. Mally was a featured speaker.
What a worthwhile trip it turned out to be! First, Mally is brilliant, and diagnosed my problem with clarity and precision. With his “sniper-specific” approach, he explained that my fall disturbed the biomechanics of my scapula, and no amount of banging on my clavicle was going to reduce the dislocation until that distortion was addressed. He adjusted the scapula, then the clavicle, and finally the humerus to the glenoid, and for the first time in nine weeks, I felt like my arm was part of my body again.
Those of you who practice spine-only techniques, stop cringing. This guy has a solid chiropractic philosophy, and believes that distortions in the foot, knee, and hip can be underlying causes for chronic subluxation patterns. Likewise, his research has demonstrated that upper extremity adjusting is indicated at times when those structures interfere with normal function, leading him to coin the word “structional” – faulty structure causing functional changes, that must be handled as primary lesions.
He checked and adjusted me five times over the two days, and we made significant progress with his innovative protocols – you ought to make it your business to take his programs, his ownership of biomechanics will make you proud to be a chiropractor.
I also discovered ProSport, the brainchild of Dr. Ed Corley of Puyallup, WA. Quietly, ProSport has been providing cutting edge seminars for fifteen years, focusing on sports, especially the rodeo. Dr. Corley has put together an excellent series that will expand your clinical expertise and broaden the scope of patients you can help.
I highly recommend that you find a way to experience both Mitch Mally and ProSport, and explore the cutting edge of chiropractic technique. With top shelf vendors like Bio Freeze and FootLevelers behind them, you’ll find the seminars first class and full of pertinent clinical tools that will help you help more people.
Open your mind – smart chiropractors are looking at health and wellness in new ways that are consistent with chiropractic philosophy, yet push the envelope of clinical strategies. Stay current, and watch the positive impact it has on your practice.
